Donor Impact

Harry and Lorraine Hammerly

Harry and Lorraine Hammerly feel right at home partnering with Habitat for Humanity. As active members of 3M Cares, a volunteer organization comprised of retired 3M executives, they’ve learned first hand how to help families succeed from the ground up.

Since the organization started supporting Habitat for Humanity in 1996, they’ve built 31 homes and raised $1.3 million. In 2007 alone, the group built four homes in Woodbury. The nonprofit’s approach to affordable housing appeals to the Hammerlys.

“I like how the organization describes its work as a hand up, rather than a handout,” says Harry. The dollars from the mortgages go into new housing, homeowners participate in the construction and the default rate is less than two percent.

“The people we’ve talked to tell us how much they appreciate the boost for their family. That feels good,” adds Lorraine.

It’s just one way the Hammerlys use their Donor Advised Fund, the Lorraine and Harry Hammerly Fund, to support their favorite charities. They also like the convenience of their Fund, because it gives them the option to make gifts of stock and then make contributions from it.
