Words Work! for a Spanish-Speaking Family

A Special Gift for a Father

Imagine being a father who is suddenly put into a new role - family reader - but you’re unsure about how to make the most of it.

At a recent Words Work! family literacy event for Spanish-speaking families, a father shared his story about the gift he had been given that enabled him to enjoy reading with his daughter.

The man’s wife had passed away within the last year. His wife was the one who read most often with their daughter. In her absence, he needed to fill that role.

He attended the Words Work! event, where he learned about the most effective ways to read with his daughter. He learned how to ask questions about the story, how the words are not always the most important part of the story, and how he could help make reading fun.

After the meeting, the father told his daughter’s teacher that he felt much more confident about his new role as family reader with his daughter.
