New Foundations Inc
Background and Purpose
New Foundations Inc (New Foundations) was founded in 1994 in alliance with other community agencies to provide safe, affordable, supportive housing for women in recovery from addiction. Through its holistic approach, New Foundations strives to increase the likelihood of continued sobriety, economic self-sufficiency, and a healthy family life.
Initially, New Foundations operated transitional housing for homeless women and children. In 1998, New Foundations purchased the Crestview Apartments at 1161 - 1171 Westminster on St. Paul's East Side and formed the Crestview Apartment Partnership (Crestview) with Project for Pride in Living, which focuses on developing and managing housing, while New Foundations provides intensive supportive services to women, men (HUD required New Foundations to serve men as well as women under HUD's new contract) and children. In 2005 New Foundations expanded Crestview and added an additional 14 units of housing.
Crestview currently has 44 units of supportive housing for homeless individuals and their families. The adults living in Crestview are struggling with mental illness, chemical dependency and poverty. Each individual benefits from comprehensive services that aid in economic stability (work readiness, job training, budgeting, building credit history), recovery, case management (reunification planning), and supports for children (child care, tutoring, therapy). New Foundations also operates Children's House, a licensed family childcare home providing care for New Foundations families, and Hope Chest, a loan fund to help residents with education and employment needs.
Current Request
New Foundations is requesting second year bridge funding to help support its Crestview Community supportive housing program. New Foundations is in the midst of developing a strategic fundraising plan and needs time to implement the plan and develop methods for securing individual contributions. The staff continues to work with the state to develop long-term funding strategies for supportive housing. The second year grant funds will be used to support the programs that serve the 44 families that live at Crestview. Specifically funds will support programming over the next year.
