Legacy Builder: Annie Paper

Over the years, many people have given to The Saint Paul Foundation's unrestricted endowment, either through their estates or with current gifts. These gifts allow us to meet community needs through a variety of grants.

When Annie Paper passed away in 1944 and established a $5,000 trust through her will, she became our first donor and the first person to give a gift to our unrestricted endowment fund.

Born in Russia in 1868, Annie's family immigrated to Saint Paul, where she was known for her personal generosity. That generosity became our first-ever grant in 1952 to the International Institute. The grant money was used to buy materials for use in teaching English to prospective citizens - a fitting memorial to a woman who once was a new arrival herself.

Annie's legacy continues to this day: that original $5,000 gift is part of our permanent endowment, which provides grants to organizations that work to improve lives in Greater Saint Paul for future generations.
